Sky high on the enormous success of their star gazing events, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority and the Cardiff Astronomical Society know there is a real appetite for all things astronomical here in the Bannau Brycheiniog, so they have teamed up to allow that public that rare chance to take a peek at the sun during the day using special telescopes to ensure it’s safe to look at the sun.
The sun, solar flares and possibly even the moon will be revealed when the National Park Visitor Centre, near Libanus is briefly transformed into a mini daylight observatory on Saturday 31st July. The event will offer a wonderful opportunity to view the sun and the sky, actual telescopes plus learn about star gazing equipment and astronomy from the Cardiff Astronomical Society. The event runs from 10.30am until 4.30pm – and what’s more it’s absolutely free!
Richard Levy, National Park Visitor Centre Manager said: “Our star gazing events have become so popular that we decided to team up with the Cardiff Astronomical Society to offer people the chance to learn more about our skies and our sun. Experts from Cardiff Astronomical Society will be on hand to explain the mysteries of the sun as well as what astronomy is all about and to highlight what to look out for in our skies.”
“The National Park Visitor Centre is fast becoming the perfect location to host star gazing and solar events, with the ideal combination of being easy to get to, but protected from light pollution. We are also planning a shooting star event on Thursday 12th August which we hope will offer spectacular views of the Perseid meteor shower which is due to light up the night skies on the that evening.”
