During August people who live in Powys and the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park are being invited to enter the Wildlife on my Doorstep competition run by BIS (Biodiversity Information Service for Powys & Bannau Brycheiniog National Park), the Bannau Brycheiniog Local Nature Partnership and Powys Nature Partnership. The competition encourages participants to learn more about the wildlife around them and identify and record what they see.
To enter the competition participants will need to submit a photo of their favourite local wildlife sighting or favourite place to watch wildlife and answer three simple questions. Entries will be accepted from individuals, community groups, schools, teams, clubs, or any other organisations. All that is requested is that people are interested in improving their wildlife identification skills. Three winners will each receive a £100 Natural History Book Service (NHBS) voucher to purchase wildlife identification guides or equipment to help improve their wildlife identification skills further. The vouchers are funded by Local Nature Partnerships Cymru.
Maria Golightly, Bannau Brycheiniog Local Nature Partnership said,
“With our natural environment in dramatic decline we want to engage people and communities with nature and its recovery. Through working in partnership with other Local Nature Partnership groups on activities such as Wildlife on my Doorstep, we are encouraging everyone in the Park to get outside, discover the nature around them and how it benefits us all.”
Ben Mullen from BIS (Biodiversity Information Service for Powys & Bannau Brycheiniog National Park) added, “By entering the competition entrants can let us know about their favourite wildlife or wildlife watching place and be in with a chance to learn more about it. You can then help to ‘put wildlife on the map’ by turning your sightings into biological records. With this information, and sightings submitted by experienced recorders and contributors, we can build a picture of what is happening and where in our natural world and how to better protect it.”
Powys Nature Partnership’s Holly Dillon said,
“Through this competition we are encouraging everyone to get outside and learn more about the wildlife on their doorstep. This is a fantastic opportunity for the Local Nature Partnerships to work together in our common goal of increasing awareness of nature across Wales.”
