The Fforest Fawr Geopark festival, GeoFest, starts this Saturday 25th May and runs until Sunday 9th June. The annual event invites everyone to get out and discover the Geopark, which covers the western half of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, through a programme of free events and walks.
For families the festival highlight will be the GeoFest Family Activity Day taking place at Craig-y-nos Country Park on Wednesday 29th May, 10am-4pm. The meadow will be jam-packed with lots of free activities including stone carving, a mini-dig, a mini-pond and find out more about the 30 Days Wild challenge with the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. Have a go at a spinning with the Tawe Guild of Spinners and Weavers, or create a mini wool creature at Ffolky Ffelt’s needle-felting workshops. For the more adventurous there is the Absolute Adventure zip-wire or canoeing on the lake, and say hello to Dinky Donkeys, Bertie & Goose from Good Day Out. A perfect half-term day out for all the family!

Over the two weeks of GeoFest a programme of guided walks take place exploring the waterfalls, burial cairns and wandering walls of the west. On Thursday 30th May join botanist Char Join botanist Charles Hipkin, zoologist Michael Isaac on a tour of the national nature reserve at Craig Cerrig-gleisiad. Explore Nant Crew with the National Trust ranger Huw Barrell on Wednesday 5th June, passing waterfalls, to Blaen Crew and Craig Gwaun Taf in the Central Beacons. Join Geopark officer, Alan Bowring on a tour of Cribarth, the limestone ridge overlooking Craig-y-nos Country Park on Thursday 6th June. The Geopark’s newest Geotrail and arguably the National Park’s most interesting hill! And on Friday 7th June walk to the Cairns of Cefn Car and find out what a ‘wandering wall’ is.
