The history and heritage of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park will be brought back to life at a ‘Heritage Day’ event to be held on Sunday 15th October 2017 at Theatr Brycheiniog, Brecon. The event, hosting a range of knowledgeable guest speakers, will run from 9.30 – 16.30 and is free to the public with tickets obtainable from the theatre.
As part of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park 60th Anniversary, the day will tell the diverse and interesting story of the past. Many believe that the landscape of the park is unspoilt and natural, but in fact it has been shaped and changed by people and industry over many thousands of years.
The legacies left can be seen in the diverse archaeological heritage, historic buildings and settlements, with a wealth of archaeology from prehistoric stone circles and burial chambers to Iron Age hillforts, Roman camps, medieval castles and the remains of an industrial past.
There will be a total of ten presentations focusing on various historic topics including ‘Explosive Times’, a celebration of the former Glyn-Neath Gunpowder Works with Ruth Coulthard from Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority and Phil Braithwaite from UK Restoration; ‘Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal: Issues and Opportunities’ a presentation by Andrew Stumpf from the Canal and River Trust and ‘Blaenavon World Heritage Site – Recording Change and Managing Monuments’ a talk from Amelia Pannett from CADW. Other guest speakers will cover many other areas of historic interest.
Mr. Julian Stedman, Member Champion for Historical and Cultural Heritage at Bannau Brycheiniog National Park Authority said; “Bannau Brycheiniog National Park has a rich wealth of history and we would like to send out an open invitation to the public to come and join us for this event, we have experienced guest speakers and will really be bringing the heritage of the park back to life.”
